I don't know how Elisha knew what he knew because before they embarked on that journey Elijah begged him to stay behind that he was going to Bethel from Gilgal and Elisha refused to allow his master be, he was desirous of something and hoping to get it so he decided to follow until he gets it, From Gilgal which means "rolling" he allowed all things to roll away...
