 Eulogy in Honour of Professor Stella Chinye Chiemeke

Today, I am writing in deep gratitude and celebration of an extraordinary era; an era defined by the remarkable leadership of Professor Stella Chinye Chiemeke as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor.

Fondly known by me as the “Iron Lady,” she came into office with a clear vision and an unshakable resolve to bring sanity, structure, and excellence to a young and evolving institution. And indeed, she did just that. Through discipline, consistency, and courage, she transformed systems, raised standards, and built a culture of accountability that will endure for years to come.

Professor Chiemeke was more than an administrator; she was a mother to both staff and students. A “no-nonsense” mother, yet one whose firmness was always rooted in fairness and genuine care. She instilled discipline not by words alone, but through action—leading by example in her work ethic, responsiveness, and dedication.

It became a defining hallmark of her leadership that no correspondence—whether from staff or students—lingered on her desk for more than 24 hours. In an environment where administrative delays are often the norm, she stood out as a symbol of efficiency and respect for people’s time and concerns. She ensured that no one, whether known to her personally or not, suffered undue delay due to bureaucracy.

Her sense of justice was unwavering. She treated all staff and students on a blind scale—without bias, without favoritism, without regard for status or familiarity. In her administration, fairness was not a slogan; it was a standard.

Beyond her strength was a deeply human and compassionate leader. I recall vividly being part of the pioneering team for the CBT examinations in the institution. Despite not knowing many of us personally, she welcomed us with open arms—literally—offering warm hugs that affirmed our efforts and encouraged our commitment. That moment remains a powerful testament to her ability to connect, inspire, and uplift.

Under her stewardship, the University of Delta achieved remarkable growth and recognition, rising to rank among the 52 most prestigious universities in Nigeria—an extraordinary accomplishment for what was still a young university. This milestone reflects her vision, her drive, and her refusal to accept anything less than excellence.

Her leadership also extended to tangible acts of support. When the Faculty of Science required critical infrastructure, she responded decisively by donating a brand-new soundproof generator—demonstrating her commitment to creating an enabling environment for teaching, learning, and research.

As she concludes her tenure as Vice-Chancellor, we do not say goodbye—we say thank you. Thank you for the discipline you instilled, the systems you built, the fairness you upheld, and the lives you touched.

Professor Stella Chinye Chiemeke leaves behind not just an office, but a legacy—one that will continue to guide, inspire, and challenge us to do better.
