*There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him*." 
*John.3.1 -2*

Most times our names reflect in our character and our nature and sometimes too our name attract certain things to us. Though our names were giving to us without our knowing or cooperation but it has a way of influencing and effecting what happens to us. A man was called Jabez because he was born in pain and all through his life pain followed him until he called on the God of Israel.
*Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain*.” *1 Chro 4:9*.

The name Nicodemus simply means conqueror of the people, or victor of the people so the name simply means that he should have dominion over others and that was what he was doing as a teacher of the law and as a Pharisee but when he saw Jesus, studied him and evaluated all His actions and inactions and came to the conclusion that Jesus was from God all that changed.

First and foremost before he came to God he first and foremost conquered himself for God maybe because he knew that no one can give what he or she does not have hence he conquered himself before thinking of conquering others this we saw plainly in his coming to Jesus and submitting to the authority of Jesus.

Mr Nicodemus was able to conquer pride in himself and went to Jesus to be schooled, secondly he conquered "hear say" by going to Jesus anyway irrespective of his position in life, thirdly he conquered distraction by going to Jesus in the night and he conquered his ego by submitting to be a disciple of Jesus.

This is exactly what it takes to be a good child of God or a follower of Jesus. For anyone to successfully follow Jesus the person must as a matter of necessity have to conquer himself so that nothing outside of you can bring you down. Remember that it is not the amount of water in the ocean that capsizes the boat but the little water the the boat has inside. "Reason am"
